There are a lot of questions for men deciding to come to group. They know they need help but is it safe? Absolutely not. Nothing safe about it. We purposely make it dangerous in every way because danger gets you better. Get dangerous or die.
If you want to see the dead raised to life, come to group. It will happen, you will see it with your own eyes, dead men coming alive.
You can’t prepare for what you are about to experience, you just walk in desperate and the transformation begins. One day at a time, one week at time, one relationship, one truth telling, one feeling, one word, one confession, one good cry at a time. Though you cannot prepare, be prepared to:
Prosper. Be prepared to make friends, be happy, to know God, to be known, to know others. Be prepared to cry, laugh, feel, touch, talk, be heard, listen, to understand. Be prepared to be dangerous, have fun, work hard, feel things you have never felt, talk with people you have never talked to before, kill passivity, face fear, sit in pain, and weep. Be prepared to increase in your vocabulary, travel, be recklessly honest, shock people, make people uncomfortable, stop apologizing, stop joking, and come out of hiding. Be prepared to protect the weak, know your bible, make money, connect with old friends, give to those who helped you, bear good fruit, and go to the cross. Be prepared to change, to ride, hunt, fish, shoot, climb, play, be in creation, get naked, have great sex, have good theology, become disciplined, and receive revelation. Be prepared to lose weight, look good, smile, eat great food, experience extreme pleasure, get compliments, and receive compliments. Be prepared to cry like a baby, sleep like a baby, and trust like one. Be prepared to be comforted, excepted, received, nurtured, and loved. Be prepared to become a man, to be fascinated, to learn, and to be surprised.
If you come to group, and you are man enough to stay these things will happen. Do not come looking for the encounter with God to fix your problem, come to embrace the process and the encounter will happen. Come to group to make friends, to be honest and get in the light. Come because you need to, because you have to, stay because you want to. Stay because you keep getting better, stay because you are having fun, stay because we are having church like you always thought it could be, stay because you have friends, stay because you have more work to do, stay because your new freedom is being passed to other men and their families. Stay because you feel God, stay because you love yourself, and other men love you too. Come to get better, stay because there is no place you would rather be.
