One of the best prophetic words I ever received came 20 years ago straight out of scripture. “As I was with Moses I will be with you.” (Joshua 1 )I kept getting that scripture over and over again, through people, shred’s of paper on the ground, my bible kept opening up to it….. I couldn’t get it out of my head for a long time. I wanted what Moses had, and wanted to do what Moses did. I read the story over and over again. I prayed radical prayers like make me even more humble than Moses……..really dumb stuff to pray….but well intended. Like all great prophetic words there comes a point when you wish you would have never of gotten it because it costs you so much. You went after it, it didn’t happen, then you tried to forget about it and get on with your life, ….the seed completely dies,…….then when you don’t expect it 10 15 20 years later it’s revived in a suprising way that you would have never imagined and it’s better that you could have expected.
The story of Moses is the story of Israel, the story of us. Trapped, in slaved, and oppressed. Israel finally humbles down and asks God for help. He shows up with Moses, his brother and a staff. Then things got worse before they got better. When they finally got out, they didn’t know what living free was like so it took them a long time to figure it out before they even got to the promise land. Sound familiar? It does, because it’s you. It’s me. It’s your journey out of sin, out of sexual bondage to freedom. Let’s break this Moses story down and look at the similarities.
You are completely trapped and helpless to get out on your own. You pray and ask for help but it doesn’t come the way you think it should. Help comes through someone you don’t even like….this Moses guy is causing problems. It’s getting worse, there is chaos all around me. You are so deeply trapped it takes sometime to get you out, to break this crap off of you. Blood, frogs, knats, locus, fire, hail, lice, boils, darkness and death. When it seems like there is no more hope, the sun comes out you get some money and you get to leave. But wait,…they changed their mind. They don’t want to let you go, so they keep trying to kill you, but you miraculously escape and get a clean break in another land. But wait, what do I do now? What do I eat? How do I live? You have to learn to do life completely different. You’re now free, and have to learn to live that way. It takes discipline, faith, relationships, and hard work. ….It’s going pretty good, but you get bored and God seems far away so you screw up sexually, then you see how screwed up that is and repent….but you need a few rules to help you. You get some, they are rules about relationships and keeping those relationships healthy, both between you, and your God. This helps, you still make mistakes, but you press on. You fight some battles, you win most, you lose a few, you learn, you grow, and your God provides for you as you grow up to be a man. He keeps pushing you, he wants more for you, he sends you into a place that you know is to much for you, you can’t do it, but he said you can. You waver, wrestle, and want to do the right things but you give in to fear and back off…so you wander around in the desert some more, you get hungry, you want all that God has for you, for your family, for the generations to come. You get angry at yourself for backing off and you firm up yourself from the inside and go for it. You pursue complete freedom, you’re not satisfied with just a little, you want it all, so you cross the river, you fight, you find your own food, you remove even more sin from your life and you put it to death. You fight not alone, but with friends, you win many times, and lose one every now and then. People die around you but you keep going. You gain your inheritance, then you help others gain theirs. You settle down, but you’re vigilant. You know what it took to get there so you teach your son’s about it, you’re grateful.
Every man reading this that is going after and establishing sexual purity within himself is Moses. It wasn’t just my word, it is yours too. With your life and the way you live it you are leading men out of sin to freedom, the deepest kind. It’s messy difficult work but extremely rewarding. With every man you help you are changing history. You have an intimacy with God that few others have, its’ solid, real, and honest. You are friends that speak face to face and he listens to you. You can argue with him and change his mind, he trusts you. His help is always there, you need it and know you do. You understand it was his mercy that got you out and because of that you’re humble, a real non-religous humble you don’t have to fake, it’s real, it’s true, and you are grateful, his faithfulness is always on your mind. Your freedom is powerful, but how you got it is even more powerful. It’s a monument for others to see, you are a walking living stone.
The cool part about Moses is that he didn’t want to be Moses. He didn’t want it the way he got it. He wanted to kill people, he wanted it his way. His way didn’t work and over time he got it Gods way. He embraced the direction God had over his life. It didn’t look like he had imagined, but it turned out much better because he went with it, and got so much more.
