What a crazy term you hear at Man Alive, but it so accurately describes the process of honesty and vulnerability needed to get healthy. Gutting yourself is the intentional revelation of events from your past about which you feel shame. It’s a calculated, intimate share of the pains and failures that are warping your today.
The response I often get is why should I share that with you. I totally get it, I have been burned in the past. I have shared my secrets, my pains, and I was mocked and they later used them against me. I made vows that I would never let anyone know again. Those secrets and those vows kept me isolated.
Ken Williams has a great quote “You’ll never know unconditional love ’til you’ve shared your real condition.” Ken nailed it right there. As long as there is a part of me that I hold back, I am unable to receive your love. The Lie is: if you knew what I really did last night, if you knew what I did in college, you would reject me.
At ManAlive, you will be with a group of guys who aren’t trying to fix you. They will listen, ask deep questions, give you the opportunity to gut yourself and expose your hidden shame. As you gut yourself, you are left open, raw, and exposed and in that moment you will experience Unconditional Love where you always thought you would find judgement and pain.
This is the love of Christ in action. This is real church. The guys who go deep, who go after the shame, who gut themselves week after week are the guys who get better. They are they guys who come fully alive as they are fully forgiven. So I ask you, why not gut yourself?
