Labels are often lazy or misinformed attempts make people comfortable with another s identity. Loner, goth, punk, preppy, teenie, nerd, dork, geek, gangsta, rebel, poser, hippie, skater, druggie, stoner, jock, weirdo, antisocial, bully, gamer, redneck, goody goody, fat, skinny, conservative, rocker, liberal, Gay, straight, blue/white collar, rich, middle class, or poor. Evangelical, Pentecostal, baptist, drunk, sex addict, workaholic. The list goes on,….and on, and on…
The problem with labels is that they pigeon hole people, and they have a way of exerting control over those who except them over themselves. Like the guy in Jr High who was called gay all the time. After hearing it so many times he begins to except the label as true. Words hold the power of life and death. Say no to anything that is not true about you.
For years when I was younger I was regularly called rebellious. It happened so much, I excepted it as true and lived it out. Today if that happens I will stop them mid sentence and say “no, I’m not rebellious (and depending on the situation I will launch into a specific definition of what I really am) Rather,…I am passionate, I’m a catalyst of change for good, I see things differently,..or I disagree. I will often to cement in my “no” by backing it up with my resume of never in the last 20 years have I ever once played the Absalom card. I am not rebellious, it’s completely not true.
We must fight for what is true about ourselves and those around us. It’s work that you can’t be passive about to find the right and specific words that tell the story correctly about us, and about others that we’re in relationship with. Abuse happens when we agree with wrong.
Sexual sin is rooted in self hatred and to get out of it you must learn to love yourself. Part of doing that is when needed we defend who we really are. It’s hard work but you’re worth it. You are unique, and wonderfully made. The odds of your existence between your fathers sperm count and mothers eggs is incalculable. You are here for great purposes. You are uniquely you, and defined by what God says about you. Reject the lazy labels thrown out by others to make them comfortable. It’s not your job for them to be comfortable. It is your job for you to be you.
